If we are what we eat….
we need to think about what we’re eating.
I like to shove my face with all sorts of food that isn’t great for me. This is not because I don’t like healthful foods like veggies and whole grains. I do like all those things too, but let us say there is a time and place to shove my face with burgers…
chuletas too!
And what about coq au vin?!
As I make my list, I notice that the many things I love to eat is meat. Animals. Ever since I sprouted teeth, I have been caught up in the meat industry. In fact, I may have started when I was in my mother’s womb. I have been thinking it’s time to reflect upon my continued participation, even if it is as a consumer, in how animals are processed for our pots, pans, and grills.
Recently, I came upon a site for Korea Animal Rights Advocates which documents the abuse of animals while fighting for their rights in Korea. A lot commentary and updates on the dog meat industry. But I think it’s harrowing to see any animal mistreated, pigs and dogs both deserve not to suffer at our hands. It was good for me to read about Koreans fighting animal cruelty as I think the common perception is that Koreans don’t care about this as an issue.
KARA has a chart on their website that keeps an ongoing tally of animals killed for consumption worldwide. From rodents to camels, it looks like we are eclectic in our taste for flesh. Some of this has to do with what has historically been accessible to us in our environment. I would add monkeys to the list as they find their way on to the dinner table in many countries.
I don’t know about you, but save for a few mammals, I’ve eaten almost all the animals listed here. I think it’s time for a new list.
